How I Met The Doctor

When I was in Los Angeles in June, my friend Jake and I were milling around outside the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater waiting for another friend to put us on the list for his show.

While we waited, we decided to go into a bookstore we’d passed and look around. We’d been in there for about fifteen minutes when the door jangled open. Over a row of video tapes, I spotted a young man in a leather jacket with shaggy hair. He had rushed into the shop and was anxiously going through a few books on the shelves. He seemed to be looking for something and was annoyed when he couldn’t find it.

I watched him. When he looked up, my brain did a flip flop. He looked really familiar. He looked….he looked like someone I knew, maybe? No, that wasn’t it. He looked like a celebrity…he…was he a celebrity? All of a sudden it came at me like a rush. It was the Doctor.

At that point in my life, I’d never seen an episode of Doctor Who. I’d seen .gifs and stills on Tumblr though. His face is unmistakable.

“What’s up?” Jake asked, realizing I was staring at some dude as he rifled through pages in books.

“I think he’s from Doctor Who,” I whispered. “I’m not sure. I don’t watch it.”

• This, ladies and germs, is why Matt Smith is my Doctor and why the Moffat era is my favorite (so far). People wax poetic about the good old days of Tennant and Ten and blahblah Rose and blahblah Martha (you know I love Donna, in fact I love them all in their little ways), but… Ten would have picked up that phone. Ten would have admitted aloud how upset he was. He would have said, to Amy, how he was sorry he was letting her down and he would promise that he was trying his best. Eleven just lets it ring, has a moment to himself, and it’s so much more real. Bravo to Matt Smith, his acting is impeccable here.
• Amy Pond: the girl who waited. The girl who waited for him, and relies on him, and who has earned his trust and this monumental job he has to do because it involves River and Rory and his Amy. Picking up that phone would be too painful. Too overly dramatic. Too obvious. So we see him here, understated, disappointed in himself but flying off without her just like he did when she was 7, with clear motivations to get back to her as quickly as he can… wanting to deliver good news. So short, so simple, so incredibly touching. Long Live Moff.

He WAS fantastic. My first Doctor!

Mine too! Now I know so many people who started toward the end of Tennant or the beginning of Smith and I feel a little old.

Technically I started after Smith’s first season was already long over. As obsessed as I am, I’m still fairly new…BUT, I started with Eccleston and recommend any new Whovians do as well. I felt so much more connected to the character after following him through all those years.

30 Days of New Who | Day 01 | Favorite Incarnation of the Doctor

I know this is probably an unpopular choice but as far as new Who, I can’t help but love Eleven. I don’t really care for Nine but I adore Ten, I do, it’s just no one has won my heart like Eleven. I think you could zone in the difference in their attitudes in something as simple as their ‘catch phrases’. Ten & Allons-y, Eleven & Geronimo. It’s “Let’s go” vs. “Here we go.” Ten is a leader, a scientist, a tinkerer, a know-it-all. Eleven is an experiencer, a diplomat, a clown, and sometimes gets it wrong. Hands down, I’d rather travel with him.
